Ledger.com/Start® | Getting started with Ledger Wallet

Learn how to unbox, initialize, install Ledger Live, create accounts, protect your recovery phrase, and start managing crypto securely — step by step.

Why use a Ledger hardware wallet?

Hardware wallets like Ledger store your private keys offline — away from hackers, phishing sites, and malware. If you're new to crypto, a hardware wallet dramatically reduces the risk of losing funds to online attacks because the critical signing happens on the device itself.

1. Unboxing & checks

Open the package and verify tamper-evident seals. Inside you should find the Ledger device, a USB cable, recovery sheets, and quick-start instructions. If packaging looks damaged or altered, contact the seller or Ledger support before proceeding.

Tip: Always buy devices directly from the official Ledger store or an authorized reseller to avoid tampered units.

2. Install Ledger Live (official app)

Visit ledger.com/start or the official Ledger website and download Ledger Live for your operating system. Ledger Live is the official management app for installing apps, adding accounts, sending and receiving crypto, and updating firmware.

  1. Download and install Ledger Live from the official website.
  2. Open Ledger Live and follow the on-screen setup wizard.
  3. Allow necessary permissions and update the app when prompted.

3. Initialize your Ledger device

Follow these steps directly on the device screen:

  1. Power on and choose "Set up as new device".
  2. Create a PIN code — choose 4 to 8 digits you can remember but others cannot guess.
  3. The device will generate a recovery phrase (24 words for most Ledger models). Write these words on the provided recovery sheet in order.
Important: Never store your recovery phrase digitally (photos, cloud, email). If someone accesses your 24 words, they control your crypto.

4. Secure your recovery phrase

Store the recovery sheet in a safe, fireproof location. Consider splitting copies in separate secure locations (e.g., safe at home, safety deposit box). Do not share the phrase with anyone — Ledger staff will never ask for it.

Pro tip: Consider using a metal backup plate for long-term physical durability.

5. Add accounts & start managing crypto

With Ledger Live and your device connected:

  1. Open Ledger Live → "Accounts" → "Add account".
  2. Choose the cryptocurrency (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.) and follow prompts to add the account.
  3. To receive crypto, copy the receiving address from Ledger Live and verify the same address on your device screen before sharing it.
  4. To send, confirm transaction details on your device — this prevents remote tampering.
Security checklist: keep firmware updated, verify addresses on-device, enable a passphrase only if you understand how it works, and never enter your recovery phrase into any computer or website.

Final notes & troubleshooting

If Ledger Live prompts for a firmware update, follow instructions carefully — updates include important security fixes. For lost PINs, your funds remain recoverable with your recovery phrase on a new Ledger device. If you encounter issues, consult official Ledger support and knowledge base articles from the Ledger website.
